In 1960, it was Philip Boyne who first used the Caldwell-Luc procedure to correct the lack of maxillomandibular space by raising the sinus membrane in the area of the molars and premolars and placing a graft composed of particulate or autogenous corticocancellous bone (originating from the patient) at the base of the to fill the bone cavity.   With the arrival of titanium root implants, it was discovered that many people’s upper maxillary bones were inadequate in height and bone width, requiring a bone graft in the maxillary sinus to make them suitable recipients of for dental implants. A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that is necessary when there is insufficient bone, during which bone is added in between the upper maxilla and the maxillary sinuses, which are an annex to the nasal passages.  Found on both sides of the nose, the shape and size the maxillary sinus varies in each person and with the passage of time it becomes larger (inappropriate for dental implants).

Who is a candidate for this technique?

This technique is recommended in cases where it is impossible to place dental implants with the proper length required in the posterior upper jaw bone. In this area there is usually a type III or IV bone quality and because of this, it is necessary to use an implant with a minimum length of 10mm and the largest possible diameter.
